Stockton Birthday Party Shooting Leaves Four Dead; Authorities Review Possible Motives

A tragic mass shooting at a child’s birthday celebration in Stockton has left four people dead and ten others injured, prompting a wide-scale investigation by the San Joaquin County Sheriff’s Office.

Authorities confirmed the attack took place Saturday evening at a banquet venue in the 1900 block of Lucile Avenue, where a large family gathering was underway. Sheriff’s Office spokesperson Heather Brent reported that four victims—ages 30, 22, 14, and 8—were pronounced dead at the scene. Fourteen individuals in total sustained gunshot wounds and were transported for medical care.

While investigators have not publicly identified a motive, early community reports suggest the shooting may have been a targeted attack. Officials stressed that these details have not been confirmed and all possible circumstances remain under review.

The roadway surrounding the venue remains closed as law enforcement processes the large crime scene, collects evidence, and interviews witnesses. No arrests have been announced and authorities have not released information regarding possible suspects.

During a press briefing, Brent stated investigators are working urgently to determine what led to the violence. “We believe this incident may have been intentional,” she said, “but the investigation is ongoing.”

Stockton Mayor Christina Fugazi expressed her condolences, saying the loss of life—especially the deaths of children—has deeply shaken the community. “This should have been a joyful weekend for families,” she said. “Tonight, our city is grieving.”

San Joaquin County District Attorney Ron Freitas called the tragedy “unthinkable” and urged anyone responsible to come forward. Stockton Vice Mayor Jason Lee also issued a statement condemning the violence and expressing support for the families affected.

State officials, including the Office of the California Governor, confirmed they are monitoring the situation and coordinating with local authorities. Assemblymember Rhodesia Ransom said her thoughts are with victims and their families, describing the event as “deeply traumatizing.”

Authorities are urging anyone with video footage, witness statements, or additional information to contact investigators immediately, noting that community cooperation will be critical in uncovering the full circumstances of the attack.
