Suspect in Guardsmen Incident Now Facing Upgraded Charges, Officials Confirm

Federal authorities have announced an upgraded charge in the case involving two National Guard members who were injured in an incident the day before Thanksgiving.

According to U.S. Attorney Jeanine Pirro, the suspect will now face a first-degree murder charge following confirmation that one of the injured service members, 20-year-old Army Specialist Sarah Beckstrom, passed away at a hospital in the Washington, D.C., area. Officials shared the update on Friday.

The suspect, identified as 29-year-old Rahmanullah Lakanwal, is also facing additional charges, including three counts related to possession of a firearm during a violent crime and two counts of assault with intent to kill while armed. Authorities say the investigation remains ongoing as they continue to review evidence and witness statements.
