ATLANTA — A night of chaos and violence erupted along Edgewood Avenue in Atlanta, stretching from late Sunday into early Monday morning, as police responded to multiple shootings—including a mass shooting that left 11 people shot, one of them fatally.
Atlanta Police Chief Darin Schierbaum confirmed that 27-year-old Santos J. Wyatt was killed in the shooting, which occurred around 1:30 a.m. outside 349 Edgewood Avenue, near a streetcar stop in the heart of the Sweet Auburn neighborhood’s nightlife district.
Another victim, an 18-year-old male, remains in critical condition, while nine others, aged between 18 and 29, were also wounded.
Chief Schierbaum said investigators believe a group of three males and one female approached a large crowd gathered at the streetcar stop, leading to an exchange of gunfire.
At least 34 shell casings and multiple firearms were recovered from the scene.
Investigators are reviewing surveillance footage from nearby cameras and are urging witnesses to come forward, noting that many bystanders likely captured critical video on their phones.
Atlanta Mayor Andre Dickens addressed the broader issue of gun violence in a press briefing, stating that the city’s epidemic of shootings is often fueled by the widespread availability of firearms and a troubling trend of disputes escalating into deadly violence.
Between Friday and early Monday, Atlanta police responded to 12 separate shooting incidents, in which 29 people were shot and two were killed.
Since Thursday, the total number of shooting victims climbed to 37, with five fatalities.
Despite the violent weekend, homicides in Atlanta are down compared to recent years. As of July 2025, the city has reported 57 homicides, compared to 76 during the same period in 2024, and 92 in 2022.
Atlanta Police Captain Jeff Childers, speaking with reporters around 5:30 a.m., said it remained unclear whether there were multiple shooters, though authorities believe the suspects fled on foot.
In addition to the main shooting, two other incidents occurred nearby:
At Edgewood Avenue and Hilliard Street, a person was shot multiple times during a parking dispute and was transported to Grady Memorial Hospital in stable condition.
Another person was shot in the ankle at Edgewood Avenue and Boulevard, also listed in stable condition.
Separately, a death investigation is underway near the Freedom Parkway ramp connecting to I-75/85, but police said there is no indication it is connected to the Edgewood Avenue shootings.
